Terk Satellite Radio Helps Pull Down Sirius Signals

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

If you spend any time in your car, then you probably have a Sirius or XM radio subscription. These services rule the subscription radio market and come as a free trial on nearly every new vehicle sold, rented or leased in the US. If you haven’t purchased a new car or truck lately, then you’ve probably upgraded the sound in your existing ride to include a satellite radio. They are almost impossible to do without, once you have experienced one.

Once you have listened to commercials-free radio, regular FM stations sound like advertisers take them over every 5 minutes. And you’ll never hear the things you hear on a satellite radio on a standard FM broadcast. Urban hits as they were written to be performed, not with cheesy sound effect covering up half the words the artists intended for you to hear. A Terk Sirius radio will hook you up. You’ll be up on the most modern and cutting edge sounds, every hit as soon as it’s a hit.

A Terk radio is easy to install with a do it yourself installation kit, or you can have a professional installation done anywhere that installs auto audio equipment. And you don’t just need a satellite radio to go with the Sirius service, you need an antenna to pull those signals down to your ride. A Terk satellite radio antenna is the obvious companion to a Terk radio. The antennas come in sleek, modern designs that reduce wind resistance and enhance the profile of your car or truck.

No one wants to ruin a classic look by bolting a large CB-looking antenna to the roof, and you don’t have to with Terk. Their aftermarket antennas are just as stylish as those sweet little wings that come mounted on the roof or deck of a new car, and they look just like they were designed as part of the original manufacturer’s equipment. Sales are going on everywhere, at retail stores and online shopping sites alike. So don’t wait. Do some shopping around and find yourself the Terk satellite radio and antenna kit you need to make your ride more ride-able.

Is Pay-per-Listen Coming to HD Radio?

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

The big dilemma facing broadcasters is this: You need to offer commercial-free HD2 channels to fend off satellite radio but if it’s commercial-free, where’s the revenue?

There are several answers to this. One is to charge for text messaging such as traffic or weather updates. For example, you might be able to subscribe to instant traffic updates for, say, $2.99 a month.

But here’s another possibility. I saw one article yesterday that mentioned pay per listen as a possible source of revenue. One example of this would be concerts. I have little interest in paying $89.50 to see Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in concert at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, but I would be happy to pay $9.95 to hear the concert live or even on a one-day delay.

I think this is one area where radio could take a lesson from pay-per-view TV. Maybe millions of people around the country won’t pay $59.95 to see a championship fight bu thousands will. And thousands times $59.95 adds up to a pretty nice hunk of revenue. Ditto, $9.95 times thousands = a nice source of revenue for HD2 broadcasters.

So what do you think? Would you be willing to pay for special events on HD Radio?

BTW: There are now more than 1500stations broadcasting HD2 channels.

Another interesting idea

Strictly speaking, this may not come under the category of pay-per-listen, but National Public Radio, working with an electronics manufacturer, has showcased an HD Radio that displays scrolling text, much like closed captioning on TV. The purpose of this technology would be to allow the hearing impaired to “listen” to the radio. It’s still only in the concept stage but, if implemented, could certainly open a new world of talk radio to those who have hearing problems.

Satellite Radio Without Commercials

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Technology has taken us to new heights not only in television, computers, but also in radio. We are no longer listening to the local stations in our cars, at home, or wherever we happen to be at the moment. Satellite radio has changed the way we are able to listen to music, comedy, and news. The best part about satellite radio is the ability to listen wherever and whenever we wish to.

When radio was first introduced you had a receiver that would try and find the local station. As radio progressed we evolved from am to fm stations to what we have now. We still have am and fm, but there are always loud commercials, maybe ten different stations, and we lose signal for various reasons. The invention of satellite radio has eliminated these problems. With satellite radio the only commercials you hear are for the service provider like XM or Sirius.

They also advertise other stations that can be found on satellite radio. You will find that there are over a hundred satellite radio stations available in your car, at home, or even with small portable radios.

One drawback to satellite radio is the cost. You have to purchase the service from one of the companies as well as the radio. This can be an expensive proposition, but then you may feel it is worth it when you consider you have news channels, rock, country, new age, hip hop, oldies, comedy, and many more channels to choose from. You no longer have to wait for good music, news or something else to listen to during the half hour of commercials. Most of the satellite radio companies will have promotional deals when you are ready to up grade.

In fact you may find that purchasing two years of service from a company will get you a free or discounted radio. You might even find that if you purchase the satellite radio for your car you can get a discount on home or portable units. Satellite radio began as just a radio for your car. Now satellite television companies have picked up the radio so that you can have satellite radio on your television. They have also created portable radios so that you can go hiking, to the mall, and for walks with music at your side.

If you are looking for a satellite radio for you car chances are you will need to have at least one working cigarette lighter to plug the radio into. You will also have to find a safe place to attach the antenna to your car. The antenna will help you receive the transmission just like a normal radio, except that it is using a satellite to bounce of off rather than the local stations transmitter.

Satellite radio has become extremely popular due to the ease of use. The ability to go anywhere and still receive music is something the new and older generations like to have. It may have started as a small business, but now we are able to get what we want when we want it.

Commercial-Free Programming: Just One of the Benefits of Satellite Radio

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Think of your favorite music or discussion topics, piped into your home or car in digital-quality, crystal-clear sound. And then think of your favorite format with absolutely no commercials – no used car salesmen, no fuel company ads, no heavy rotation ads hawking every possible product or service all the way to work and home again – all your favorite stations available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with no static.

Whether you love fifties music or reggae, conversation from right wing pundits or Air America, or even ’round the clock comedy, Satellite Radio is it. The purchase of a satellite radio and a small monthly fee will open a whole world of ad-free radio listening to you.

XM Satellite Radio offers over 150 digital channels in formats specializing in music, sports, talk, and entertainment, plus 21 channels dedicated to weather and traffic patterns in major metropolitan areas around the U.S. XM offers the deepest music playlist available, with over 2 million titles. For $12.95 a month (less if you opt for an annual contract) and the cost of an XM radio (anywhere from 50 to 200 dollars, after rebate) you will have an amazing range of music formats to choose from, from Decades to Classical to Urban, from Jazz and Blues to Latin, World, and Christian. Channels for kids are available as well, plus a variety of sports, talk and comedy formats.

Sirius offers over 60 music channels plus a wide variety of other formats, including football, soccer, and even horse racing channels. The “World” music options are a bit more edgy than the XM offerings, and offer music from all over the world, including Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, the British Isles, Central Europe and Asia. Musicians range from the Rolling Stones to the Gypsy Kings and Khadja Nin. Both XM and Sirius offer channels which give emerging artists a boost.

Sirius offers a variety of radio systems, including a Plug and Play kit with adaptors for your car or home radio, only $29.99 after the rebate; the systems go up in price and complexity from there. Subscriptions start at $12.95. Right now Sirius and XM systems are not compatible.

Owners of conventional broadcast radio stations have expressed concerns that the commercial-free satellite stations will cut into their listenership and, as a result, their ad revenue; but the proponents of satellite radio feel that that won’t happen. There’s plenty of room for free local programming offering local and regional news and events announcements. With this thought in mind, both XM and Sirius offer radios which can be connected to home or car radios without interfering with their regular operation, for the best of both worlds: free local stations keeping the listener up to date on happenings in their community, plus the best in music, talk, and sports from around the world.

Tune Me In – Turn Me On!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Although I’m a voiceover artist, I remain in radio. Not because of the great pay, recognition, fame and fortune, but for the same reason I entered the business 31 years ago… I happen to love what I do.

While radio was my full-time career for all but the last of those 31 years, I now do weekends only. The pay stinks, there are no benefits and I do not get to do what I love doing more than anything else in the whole world! Rubbing elbows with my listeners. Meeting our listeners via remote broadcasts, personal appearances, meet & greets, etc. But, there is one thing that seems to remain constant. Radio listeners (and I’m talking about terrestrial radio here) remain loyal to disc jockeys and formats to which they’re accustomed, despite the fact that disc jockeys are no longer required to be licensed by the FCC, that radio formats, because of consolidation, now seem to supply only cookie-cutter formats. Don’t believe me? Next time you’re on vacation anywhere else in the country, turn on the radio and tell me what you hear. It will be that same list of about 250-400 songs rotated over and over again.

Think about this! Commercial radio today can be likened to managed health care – the difference being, radio is still free. Enter satellite radio. The predictions I made about this form of our medium several years ago are now coming to fruition. One of those predictions was that people are not going to pay for a radio subscription merely because their listening choices are endless. You may provide the format, but is there any substance? Subscriptions have not met expectations and as a result, the two satellite radio services are merging (sound familiar?).

Also, I found it unconscionable that those very services had to use commercial radio and TV to advertise their commercial-free services. Plus, the fact that “commercial-free” is a misnomer. They just aren’t presented in same way as they are in terrestrial radio.

Some have argued that the same thing happened with the advent of cable television all those years ago. Many complained and protested that they would never pay for television they could watch for free. Boy, that sure didn’t work out to be so, did it?

But until “commercial-free” radio realizes that they can’t merely provide the same programming as terrestrial radio sans commercials, they’re not gonna grow, let alone succeed.
The business model hasn’t been completely thought through in my opinion. Oh, they figured they’d offer free subscriptions for a year through auto dealers. The idea seemed good enough. But, what they didn’t take into account was that after a year of free satellite radio, those subscribers discovered that what was being offered isn’t worth $12 a month ($144 a year) to listen. The marketing plan seems backwards to me. As a result, those over-bloated subscriber numbers seemed to melt away after their free year was up. Oops!

I just purchased a creative Zen 60 GB Vision W media player. I’m in the process of loading it up with what I want to hear.

So… what are you listening to?

Satellite Radio

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Satellite radio is a commercial free digital radio service offered to subscribers for a fee. This type of service will sound clearer than regular radio because the signal is sent to the receiver directly via satellite, unlike regular radio signals which can easily be disrupted by any form of interference as well as distance from the source.

Advantages of satellite radio

Other than a clearer reception, satellite radio has many more advantages over conventional radio. Since it generates its income through membership fees it does not need to sell advertisement time to other companies. Therefore, satellite radio is mostly commercial free.

Satellite radio will also provide you with a wider geographical range in signal strength. Unlike regular radio which relies on signal strength of their antennas, and your receiver?s ability to pick up their frequency, satellite radio receive its signal directly from the communications satellite. Therefore, anywhere you go you will always have a clear reception. Because of this they will also be able to provide radio service to the more rural areas which normally does not receive the regular radio signals.

Availability

Satellite radio is available all over the United States, as well as in many other countries. The United States has two providers of satellite radio. Their service, cost, and availability are almost identical to each other, with the only difference coming with the types of receivers they sell and some specific programming. With both service providers you will be able to listen to many different types of radio programs and music without any interruptions and with crystal clear reception.

Necessary equipment

Satellite radio will require you to purchase a new receiver in order for you to take advantage of this service. These units are very inexpensive; in fact most new cars today already include a satellite radio receiver already installed. You will be able to buy units for your home, as well as units for you car. Once you subscribe to this service you will be able to listen to your satellite radio anywhere you go. You will not be limited to listening to it in only one location.

How Does Satellite Radio Work

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Satellite radio is a digital broadcast sent through a communications satellite to a receiver in your home or car. You will be able to receive the signal for a satellite radio anywhere where there is line of sight between your receiver and the satellite, given that there are no major obstacles such as tunnels or buildings. A subscriber of this service will be able to access satellite radio channels at any location.

Commercial Free

The main disadvantage of satellite radio versus regular radio is the fact that with satellite radio you must pay to subscribe for the service. Generally, membership fees will cost you $12 to $15 a month for unlimited access to their service.

The advantage of paying for this type of service is that the operational cost to run the service is provided by the fees. Because of this, it is no longer necessary to sell advertisement time, making it possible for uninterrupted, commercial free listening. For some people, the monthly payment they pay for this type of service is worth it in order for them to experience radio without any commercials, and with clear digital sound.

Access

In order to access the satellite radio network you will need to have a receiver that is capable of receiving the signal at the specific frequency your service provider is transmitting. Different providers have exclusive rights to specific frequencies, and receivers from other providers are not compatible with signals of different companies. If you are switching satellite radio providers you will either need to obtain a new receiver, or have your current one modified to accept the frequency of your new provider.

The United States has two satellite radio providers in which you will be able to subscribe to. They will both offer you similar services at relatively the same cost. With the fee you pay you will be able to gain access to their service for two or more receivers. Depending on your provider, additional receivers may cost you an extra fee.
